What is a GASTROPUB?

The term “gastropub” was coined in 1991 by David Eyre and Michael Belbon when they opened a pub in London called The Eagle.  The concept arose from a conscious effort to promote great food in well-loved places.  It is a combination of the word “pub” (short for public house) and “gastronomy” (the art or science of good eating).  Gastropubs are known for their exceedingly fresh, high quality and sophisticated food as well as a creative beer and wine selection.  The major difference between the Gastropub and its formal ‘Bistro’ counterpart is that the atmosphere is warm, inviting and unpretentious.
